Seasonal recipes for today's kitchen

About

About

Sunnyside Cook started in January 2015 as a project to revisit recipes in old issues of Bon Appétit that survived a big move. Read about the decision here.  While I explore these treasured volumes month by month, I will post recipes, adaptations, and thoughts about the food that results.  Since I love creating in the kitchen (and eating!), I will add current recipes I’m cooking from time to time as well.

I am from a family who loves to cook, talk about cooking, show love through yummy dishes, and cook some more. When I was growing up, more people were always welcome to join our dinner table.  If someone stopped by our house near dinner time –in Louisiana, it was “supper time” — my mother would often say, “Your name is in the pot,” and that friend would sit down and share our meal with us.  My parents were both great Louisiana cooks, and my siblings and I grew up comfortable with the “trinity” that starts most Cajun recipes. While the rouxs, gumbos, and étouffées  of Cajun cooking are close to my heart (and the reason I have to keep going to the gym), I have expanded my world of cooking to many other cuisines.  My children and husband have also broadened my culinary horizons, as they are all good cooks–and good eaters!

I love fresh food that is not overcomplicated to cook and makes the most of seasonal ingredients.  Mostly, I love gathering friends and family around our dinner table.  Your name is in the pot!

  • Dawn — I hope to be a little less clueless in the kitchen by following your fabulous food blog. Will try the Morrocan chicken dish next!

  • Dawn, can’t wait to try the salad recipe (beans, tomatoes, and chèvre). And the orange-lemon cake. : )

  • It is obvious from your orange and lemon cake recipe that you have created this entire blog for one reason and one reason only: to steal away my handsome Mi Amor. You fool no one, you hussy.

    • Thank you for the compliments, Kathy. I’ve never been called an h-word before! It’s fun! I adore you. And we both know that Antonio adores you, too.

  • Dawn, I am excited to follow your blog….I have heard all about your fabulous food from Jennifer thru the years so I will gobble the pages as you write..and you are funny..hahah..

  • Dawn, how the blog looks totally scrumpious and how lucky are we that perhaps you will need a couple of guinea pigs to test some of these recipes.

  • If there was ever anyone born to create a website about cooking experiences, it is you, Dawn. I love the style, format, and voice of your first entry and can’t wait to see the subsequent ones. You may even revitalize my own kitchen.

  • Dawnboat, your blog looks great, and the food looks even better! Congratulations on the launch of your blog and cooking project–we wish we could be there to share the bounty of your culinary endeavors!
